Master cylinder line confusion

Post by wickedinhere »

I have a 68 f-100 and i just got finished changing out my entire brake system including the brake lines. I have drums on all 4 wheels the problem i have is that
i discovered that the front brakes should be hook up to the rear res and the rear brakes hook to the front res. They fittings on my prebent lines have the lines reversed so i dont know if i have the wrong master or the line fittings are on the wrong lines or if its hookup right and i have a oddball. My master has the large
fitting on the rear and the small fitting on the front, other people say theirs is reversed from mine but my new master matched the old one. Here is a pick of the new master.

Hey wickedinhere...

Here's a pic of the MC on my '68 F250 CS, it has the stock style... both reservoirs are the same size...

I don't think you can even get that type anymore, unless you happen to find an NOS one someplace like ebay.
They have been replaced with the style that you have. (which I will be doing soon myself)
I believe (someone correct me if I am wrong)that the smaller reservoir feeds the front brakes and the larger one feeds the rear brakes.
It makes sence... longer brake lines = more fluid needed...

Also wanted to let know that
'68's ROCK!!!

kapt. the front brakes do most of the stopping and need more fluid to do that stopping so the larger rear resivoir is for the fronts. the last time i replaced my 68 master it came with several different fitting fo rthe lines. i used the ones that worked with my lines and the master to hook the lines up correctly. i will have to get a pic of it. some day. if i can make it back down there again.

I was told on these old trucks with all drums that the stopping was equal on all 4 brakes. I know on the disk brake setup the front does most of the stopping.

Hey wickedinhere...

I'll try to get a pic posted tomorrow on how the lines are hooked up on my '68... don't know if that will help or not.

I've had my truck for 21+ years now, and not had to replace the MC...
I'm gonna pretty soon, simply 'cause the top started leakin' and I can't find the right rubber gasket for it.
Certainly don't want brake failure when yer haulin' around a 1700 lb cabover camper...

I think i got it, i havent tried it yet but if i remove both adapters i believe i can swap the lines and screw them directly onto the master. I am gonna try it with my old master first and see what happens. I did talk to a friend of mine that works on brakes and he said they just did new brake lines on an old trans-am and the new lines were backwards like mine he said its common on old cars. He said that most of the time they leave it as is and it works but i want mine to be right.

Hey kap iv'e been talking w/wick on another thread about this. Most bumps to my understanding front brakes are supplied from the larger resesvoir, and normally it's the back one that's what the ford shop manual shows. I recommended wick to start another thread so he could ease his mind that he got it hooked up right. My 70 is all drums and is hooked up as me and fordman has described- small res feeds back and large the front, i would be courious to know if it's different depending on the year model. Also on the m/c's with the same size resesvoirs are still available thru npd as well as the rubber gaskets, those m/c's are taller than the standard.
I'm also curious to know if there's a difference in disc m/c's vs drum. I hope you or someone else can help clear this up. Thanks! Robbie

I got it figured out i didnt need the adapters when you remove the adapters the lines screw directly to the master cylinder and the front brakes go to the rear res and the rear brakes goto the front res. I sure am glad i got that figured out i guess the adapters are for a different truck. Here are the pics.

Cool...

Now, I will know how to hook mine up when I replace it... :D
I have been hesitating on buying a new one, 'cause I wanna upgrade to disc brakes... and would havta change it anyway...
I have the disc brake setup, I just wanna sandblast and rebuild & paint everything before I do the swap...
The old MC seems to work fine other than the gasket leaking, I'll havta check the NPD catalog for that gasket...

Thanks again...
