Brake Booster Question

Brake Booster Question
So I just swapped my '69 cab onto my '76 frame. I used the '76 brake booster and m/s and the pedal seems low to me. I haven't fired it or anything so its not low with vacuum to the booster, its just the way it bolts up. Are the pedal assemblies beteen the two years different? Do I need a booster for a '69 or something? Anyone had this problem before?

Not really. My '76 booster bolts in fine and I am able to bolt the pedal the the booster rod. However once hooked up my pedal is to low. My brake light switch will not work in my pedals current location. I drove the '76 before I took it all apart and there was no vacuum to the booster, could I have somehow damaged it when trying to stop my truck with no power brakes and now it wont return to its normal position? According to that tutorial I shouldn't be having any issues. Any other ideas?

it should be the same height as it was before the booster install. the only thing i can think of is the pedal rod adjustment on the booster. there should be a threaded rod and nut to adjust the booster rod in and out for the the pedal height. but you say its not returning? which master cylinder did you use? was it the 76 master or the 69 master? you need the 76 master to match the 76 brakes.

I used the booster and m/s off of the '76. So maybe I need to adust the rod? You would think that it would already be adjusted properly. But now that i think about it, it was also low in the '76 before I took it all apart so maybe it is just out of adjustment? Any other ideas? I will try adjusting it tonight and see what happens.

I know that I read somewhere on this site that a lower brake pedal was one of the improvements with the redesign for '73. I think Keith even posted a Ford advertisement about this. Would that be the problem?

Well as it is right now the pedal is low enough so that the brake light switch is not making contact where it is supposed to. I dont think I can adjust it enough to work in the pedals current location. What do you think i should do?

Corbin, Check to see if both m/s rods are the same length. I had this happen when I replaced the m/s on my 70 F100, the rod with the rebuilt m/s was the wrong one (too short).I returned it to my supplier and found that it had been boxed wrong. Hope this helps.

yea its the lower brake pedal of the 76 that is doing it to you.
when the master is bolted to the booster it won't have a rod. the booster has the rod and is shorter a little for the 73 and up trucks lower feature brake pedal.powerslave390 wrote:Corbin, Check to see if both m/s rods are the same length. not unless you can adjust the rod on the booster you have. i haven't ever heard of any problems with doing this swap . i do think that manual brakes and power brakes do have a slight bit of different height for the pedal but not as much as you are talking about.

So I will try adjusting the booster I have and if that doesn't work i will find a different booster. Is the adjuster underneath the little rubber boot on the rod? I didn't pay attention and didn't see the adjuster on the rod.
