Do not use a press to install the pulley, you will destroy the pump. The pulley can only be installed by threading a stud into the center hole and then tightening a nut down against the pulley. You must do it this way as if you try and use a bolt it will destroy the threads. This can actually be done at home with an air impact very easily. Thread a piece of allthread in, lube the outside of the shaft and the inside bore of the pulley with light oil, put the pulley over the stud, install a few washers with some grease on them and then thread a nut on and tighten until the pulley is seated. It is actually very simple. Hawkrod390F100 wrote:Thanks for the info, i'm gonna take it to my newly acquired body/paint/miracle maker and have him press the new pulley on, if it lines up great, if not I will curse the truck for a minute and then go find a different pulley. Thanks again for the help

Hawkrod,
Hey just in case this pulley doesnt work, did you ever have a chance to find your spare pulley? Because if it doesn't work then i would be willing to fork out 50 big ones for yours.
My wife is gonna kill me or divorce me once she finds out how much money I have spent on this truck...

Re: P/S Pump Pully
***Update*** This morning when I was putting the pulley on the new pump I put the brackets on the pump as well because well they were bolted to the old nasty pump which was on the truck in the first place, well I come to find out when i'm ready to bolt the pump to the water pump and engine that the powersteering pump brackets are for those with a 351 not an FE like I have so to make a long story short, I'm s.o.l. until i find a bracket for the p/s pump. That's been my luck with this truck.
Hawkrod, you wouldnt happen to have a spare bracket laying around would you???

Sounds like you are having it rough! I do have brackets, what year and engine is it? If it is a 68/9 does it have AC? There are several versions unfortunately but I should have it. Hawkrod

Re: P/S Pump Pully
The weird thing is that on ebay I looked them up and it showed the bracket that I have as fitting a 390FE which the one I have doesn't. Anyways, I have a 1968 F-100 w/ a 390FE 2wd and no A/C. Hope this helps and I do appreciate it.

Post the item number of the auction so I can see what you are looking at. Here is a 70 and newer one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0297493057. 68 would be a two piece cast iron affair although the one I linked to above works fine on all 65-76 FE's. Hawkrod

Re: P/S Pump Pully
Hawkrod,
Here is an item number from ebay, would this one work? The one you have posted i actually have but it fits a 351 water pump and not a 390, the bolt holes do not line up. The seller says this one is off a car 390

Re: P/S Pump Pully
Hey guys,
Going to add to this thread. I'm dropping in a 351 windsor in my truck and need a pulley for it. I have the correct 351 bracket. Anyone got an idea of the pulley stamp number? Will a 302 pulley work?
Thanks,
Patrick

Re: P/S Pump Pully
It depends on the 351 you have. 69 car engines and early 70's truck engines have 3 bolt crank pulleys and those use 65-69 289/302 pulleys but most 70 and newer engines use 4 bolt crank pulleys and those use pulleys from 70 or newer 302 or 351 or even 429/460 (Ford was standardizing then). Hawkrod

Re: P/S Pump Pully
Hawkrod,
I went to the bone yard and found a bracket for the ps pump but the one I found was for a 390 w/ ac and mine does not have air. the pump bolts up fine to the bracket but I dont know if it will cause the pully to be misaligned. I did thread a pulley on it and unfortunately it does not line up with everything else. I will end up needing the pulley and any other advise you may have. Thanks again

Re: P/S Pump Pully
i haven't seen a smallblco bracket. only in pictures. i would guess they are close to the fe bracket. maybe you could shim the bracket away from the engine to make the pulley line up.

Re: P/S Pump Pully
If you got the sheet steel bracket from a 70 and later 390 they are the same with or without AC. Trucks without AC just use a thick spacer behind the bracket where it bolts to the head. What is the number on the pulley you got? Hawkrod390F100 wrote:Hawkrod,

Re: P/S Pump Pully
Looks like the pulley has an (A8) stamped in it and the bracket was from a 70 I believe but I do not have any spacer for the head. I bolted it up to the head and it seemed fine but what do I know...
