brake booster question

Post by bigdawg67 »

I have four wheel nonpower drum brakes. My question is this. Can i put a power booster on this truck with the drum brake setup it has on it now? I dont really want to do the disc brake swap just yet. I just want it to be a little easier to drive. Thanks in advance. BTW, My truck is a 67 f100.

ya you can do this swap pretty easy... just need the correct booster and bracket

1967 truck is its own booster. and 1968-72 is the same

So all I have to do is walk in o'reillys and tell them I need a power brake booster for a 1967 f100? Do they sell the brackets at part stores? Will my master cylinder work with this? Thanks Stevec for the reply.

like steve said the 67 booster is a one year only booster 68-77 are the same as far as fitting. boosters dont care if you have disc or drums they will work with either. the master cylinders are different for disc and drum front ends. not all of them will be the same size resivior. but some will be. the resivior size is determined by the size of your wheel cylinders. the disc brake master cylinder will have different sized resiviors because of the disc brake calipers. also the disc brake master cylinder has a valve inside of it to limit restrict or control the amount of pressure to the brakes.

yes you can go into oriellys and get just the booster for the 67 or a loaded booster for disc brakes for 10.00 more. if your going to upgrade to disc brakes very soon i would try and get one loaded. but you might not be able to since it is a 67. 1967 f100 didnt come with disc brakes so they wont be able to get the correct master for it unless you tell them a different year of the truck. but then the booster rod wont be the right length so you would have to redrill your brake pedal and rig up your brake light switch. since 67 is a one year only brake light switch for these trucks 67-72. ignore 61-66 info in this post. that is not the subject.

the 67 booster rod wil be shorter than 9 1/2 inches from the booster to the end of the rod. i think it will be 8 1/2 inches but i cant confirm that.

Bigdog,

I will be starting this project on my 68 in a week or so. I am going to use a booster\master from MP Brakes. I will be replaceing all of the brake hardware on the front mostly because its time but I figure why do this half way. If you want I can email you some pics of the project and lessons learned. That way at least you won't make the same mistakes I do.
I am also going to stay with drums. I thought about going disk on the front, but decided that if they were good enough for the last 41 years it should be ok with the power assist upgrade.

wouldn't it be best to just post all of that in a project update. in the project page that way everyone could see it?
