rear brakes locking before front

Post by mcolussy »

The rear brakes lock up and seem to engage before the fronts is that correct or is it time for a new master cylinder

Though to say with the info. How much force on the pedal does it take to lock them up and how long do the rear wheels lock up/engage before the front? I would first start by checking the rear drums for grease or leaking brake fluid. That would cause them to lock up. If not that maybe the wheel cylinders may be going bad also, maybe in the front ones? Good luck!

That's what my '69 F100 2wd would always do when it was all around drum brakes, the rear tires would lock up before the front. The master cylinder and all the wheel cylinder and brake components were fairly new. I think that's common for these trucks.

:yt: As long as the bed is empty and thus very light-weight, the rear brakes will lock up first. When you slam on the brakes, all the truck's weight is being transferred forward, unloading the rear end even more....so it's no surprise the rear brakes will lock up first. This is assuming, of course, that your brakes are in good shape and properly adjusted. Keep in mind that these trucks were produced as workhorses and not racehorses, and thus having a truly "balanced" braking system for them was considered unnecessary.

You can easily add a manual proportioning valve from vendors like Wilwood on the line going to the back brakes, to control the front/rear brake bias and get it more balanced.
