Are the actual housings and axles the same on all '65-72' 9" rearends regardless of the brake size??
I don't recall which year they changed (~68??) but can I just swap the backing plates with all brake components and drums from the newer larger brakes ('69-72)to the older housing('65-68)??

i think so yes. the backing plate is just held on with the four nuts or is it bolts i forget.

You have to use 68-72 axles in order to use 68-79 brakes. The 57-67 axles are just slightly narrower and the drums will hit the backing plates before it goes together completely. The difference is minor but critical. Hawkrod
