How is a manual steering box tested for wear?

Post by robroy »

'Evening,

How should I test my manual steering box for wear?

Mine's currently disconnected from the steering arms but still bolted to the frame and attached to the column--here's a photo:

Perhaps that's not the best photo, but you get the idea.

When I turn the steering wheel, I hear a fairly loud, metallic whirring sound, but I think that might be normal for this type of steering.

Unfortunately I didn't pay close attention to this when the truck was on the road.

Thanks very much!

I removed the box from the column and tested it by turning it with my hands--it definitely feels pretty horrible! It's all clunky and rough, like a moose covered in beeswax rolling down a bowling alley.

So I'm replacing it with a rebuilt box from Napa Carr Parts in Santa Cruz. The cost is around $270.

The new steering box feels absolutely wonderful in comparison! Like a tight and precise machine. I'm glad I didn't retain the old one!
