Brake Line Trouble.

Post by billbates40 »

My master cylinder was leaking brake fluid so I decided to change it out. My truck is a 1972 with a 390 in it and I'm guessing most everything in it is original. When I was undoing the brake lines from the master cylinder they broke, I actually thought this was going to happen. I just thought I would run down to the local auto parts store and pick up a couple of brake lines and after some bending I'd be back in business. The problem is that none of the brake lines I've been finding seem to fit. The line that was run before was 1/4 inch and the couplers on don't fit onto the couplers on the master cylinder. Has anyone else ran into this problem?

If the lines are indeed 1/4", they've been replaced by a previous owner. From the factory all the brake lines were 3/16". Are you sure your measurements are correct? I'd be willing to bet that the standard 3/16" lines will fit correctly.

My line was 1/4" for the rear as well ,3/16" for the fronts. I had to use a larger adapter to match up to the master, you should be able to get these at your local parts store.

O.K. this is what I was talking about. Thanks! My problem is that I've had a hard time finding the right adapters. The parts store didn't have the right grade.

I have had this trouble too. It seems the there are a few different size tubing nuts for each size tubing. I try to save the old nuts to reuse or use as sample for a new. then cut and flair the new tubing w/ the correct nut I need. I like it better then adapters, but sometimes I can't find the correct size nut, and must use adapters.
