Difference Between a Saginaw or Bendix Steering Box?

Post by Jkittle »

I'm still not sure what steeing box I have. It looks like the DS motor mount comes straight out which I guess would mean I have Bendix gear box. I can't find the right up either plaese help I need to order a new hose to replace the one that's leaking.

You're gonna need a better picture. Preferably of the whole thing. Look at the driver side motor mount tower. If it comes straight out to the frame and uses the rear holes then you've got the Bendix box. If it curves forward and uses the front frame holes then you've got the Saginaw box. The Saginaw is longer than the Bendix. That is why when you do a manual steering to power steering conversion, if you use the Saginaw box, you'll need to use a steering column out of a truck that also had a Saginaw box. The Bendix box is the same size as the manual box but they're prone to overheating. They were phased out in 68-69.

There's a write up in here about it. look at power steering conversions and you'll see for yourself.

Hey Jkittle

There is one easy way to tell for sure...
A Bendix box has a large script "B" on the case...
That gets rid of any questions.

It should be on the side facing toward the driver's side of the truck...

It's even easier then that

You have the Saginaw box.

The Sagnaw has 2 bolts no the top cover where the Bendix has 4 bolts... See this... http://www.fordification.com/images/Bendix-vs-Ford.jpg It is also alot longer...
From Fordification information. http://www.fordification.com/powersteering.htm
