Mounting Vacuum Brake Booster

Post by HH Henderson »

I want to add a booster to my 68. Presently has only a master cyl. Looking at the Cardone on Advance, there are 4 bolts on the new booster. Do these bolts fit into the firewall or do they fit into a bracket? If so where do I get a bracket. None is shown with the booster.

you need to find a parts truck and snag the brkt your needing off of it. what year model booster are you looking at? i orderd mine for a 77 and pulled the brkt off a 77. im pretty sure a 73 thru 77 will work though. you will also have to change your master cyl. over to a power assit unit.

I have not bought a booster yet, just looking and found that Advance Auto has one for 68 with the Master Cyl already mounted.
But it does not say anything about a bracket. So all I need is the unit combined plus bracket??????
Thanks and you have a good lookin ride there. :)

The brackets come up a lot on ebay if you cant find one at a junk yard. I know the brackets were the same 67 thru 72, I am unsure about later years.

One thing, you will not need a new master cylinder, the old one will bolt right on to the new booster. You don't need to disconnect brake lines or anything like that. Its a fairly easy install.

Here is a link to a thread I posted when I added a booster, it may answer a few questions.

You might check ebay for a booster & brackets. I bought mine that way thinking that if the booster was bad I still had the brackets and could use the booster to avoid the core charge when getting a new one. I was very happy when I hooked up the used booster and it worked so I did not have to get a new one.

I found a booster on e bay, but it is for disc brakes and I need to know if disc booster and drum booster are the same. If they brakets are the same, then I can use the booster for core charge.
Thanks for info

Booster should be the same, master cylinder will be different. Your existing drum/drum master cylinder should bolt right up to it.

Thanks TD. I really have no idea what I'm talking about, but find that if I make up an answer and say it with confidence, people will believe it!

I appreciate the compliment on my truck, the picture is forgiving, it's currently a 30 footer at best.
