Bump Rust Map

Post by smclaren »

Hi Guys

I live right on the coast, and most vehicles here get destroyed sooner or later from rust. http://images.google.com.au/images?sour ... a=N&tab=wi

I bought my bump from a very dry part of Australia, and now that it's on the coast (and not garaged) its gonna get attacked by salt air ... BIG TIME.

So .. I have started the prevention process using fish-oil and that's great ... but my question is .... where in your opinion do bumps tend to rust the most?

I have pretty much bathed the vehicle in fish-oil, but I want to make sure I have got the key area's. ( http://www.septone.com.au/detail.asp?it ... page_num=1 )

Because I speak the 'Queens english' and you don't  , a photo with arrows would help me understand where you mean... especially if its you responding, rjewkes.

Thanks Guys

By far, the worst areas include:

- the front cab mounts and floorpans
- the rear cab corners
- the side-to-side cab support brace (rusts at each end, where it attaches to the rocker panel)
- the driprail area
- the inner fenderwells, at the hinge attachment point

I'd say about a vast majority of regularly-driven trucks have some cancer in all of these areas. However, virtually any place that will allow moisture to collect and not immediately dry out will cause rust, and can include the front of the rocker panel area (at the base of the door post), the front of the hood and the bottom/rear of each front fender. And of course, when the caulking in the bed seam starts coming loose, it also holds moisture in, causing rust. However, the bed seam actually accumulate moisture from the back side, where the top and lower panels are spotwelded together.

Also, if a truck has ever had undercoating installed, by now it's probably coming loose, so any place where it's loose will hold moisture in and rust out the surrounding area.

I have seen lots of rust just below the Tail lights on the bed end caps. perhaps better than re-applying fish oil as suggested by the manifacturer, Some por-15 on the backside of these pannels?

There are two places where I mine has rusted through, Keith hit on one of those, the rear cab corners. The other spot for me is the bottom edge of both doors.

The rad support in my area has a tendency to rust out along the bottom lip.

about every place you guys mentioned was rusted on that 70 i junked i stomped on the floor board going after a mouse and my foot went through the floor alone with the floor matt  that and after i took out the rear bolts holding the cab down i took a 2x4 and could easily roll the cab onto its back to be hauled up on the roll back truck

My biggest rust challenge to fix is my drip rail area. Make sure you put a lot of that Aussie fish oil on that area! :)

I recently purchased a new cab that was hit on the lower passenger door, and I plan to cut off the entire roof to fix my roof. It's going to be a big job... well, for me.

Bump Rust Map/repair

Post by nmu91 »

How did you end up repairing the side-to-side cab supprt brace? Did you just weld in a patch? Did you remove one from another truck? I believe this isn't a part that you can just purchase a replacement for?! :o

I still have to get started on my truck.

Thanks.
