MC pushrod adjustment

Post by BMJs 67 »

I've been lurking around the site for quite a while soaking up the excellent info everyone has to offer and decided I better sign up. Unfortunately, I'm in a pinch and havn't had time to post pics in the new members area,,,,,I'll get to that. Long story short, I am attempting to put a new master cylinder on my 67, LWB, power drum brakes, duel pot MC.
The question I have is about the depth of the piston in the MC. On the MC that was on the truck, the hole that the pushrod went into was fairly deep, I would say around 1 1/2 inch or so, on the reman I got, the hole for the pushrod is very shallow, around 1/2 inch. I am assuming that I have the wrong MC after reading a couple other threads,,,,OR,,,,does the push rod need adjusted inward to compensate for the depth of the hole? If it is the push rod that needs adjusted, where is a good spot to adjust it to? Should it be pre-loaded at all, or should there be free play between the rod and MC piston? Any info would be great as the truck is sitting in the driveway begging to be drivin.

With the engine off, take the cover off of the master cylinder. Have someone watch the MC as you push slowly on the brake pedal. You want to see brake fluid squirt up in the bowl after you have pushed on the pedal about 3/4 of an inch. If you have to push on the pedal more then that to get it to squirt then you need to adust the rod longer. If it never squirts, it means the rod is already too long.
