You might check if the 72 had an adjustable rod connecting the booster to pedal, and the later model booster would probably not, this would cause your misalignment problem.Cardone remans the adjustable booster assy, which would cure your problem, you can go to their website and search for part numbers to take to local part store goobers.Good luck.

re: pedals
In 73 (or maybe 74) Ford changed the length of the booster push rod, which brought down the brake pedal height to slightly above the height of the accelerator pedal. There's a tutorial on this in the tech section, but it really doesn't address what you're talking about.
I did the same mod on my 70 Ranger XLT, and ran into the same problem. When I asked about it, someone on the board said they changed the design of the brake pedal to compensate for the lower height, but I don't have any details on that.
What I did on mine was to bend a piece of 1/8" x 1" aluminum to 90 degrees. I left it about 2" long on one end, and 1" on the other side of the bend. Then, I drilled the brake pedal support and drilled and tapped the metal I'd just bent so that I could bolt it in such a way that the stoplight switch contacts it when the pedal is in the up position.
I can get photos for you if you need them.
