Steering problem

Post by Faltura »

I have a very early 72 F-350 with the old split rims and bias tires manual steering. While driving on a striaght level road, I don't have to fight the steering wheel at all. But just as soon as I want to turn, it seems to want to steer harder when turning left than right. While on a road with a crest it really wants to pull right. The wheel does not seem to have a lot of play.
I had the front end aligned (alxes bent) and it did not help much. I checked the king-pins and the right one is slightly loose ( it is orange in color) the left seems ok ( black in color ) I'm guessing that the left one was replaced some time ago.

Could this steering be a result of the king pin or steering box?
I'm not sure how a bad steering box acts.

Could the bearing on the king pin be binding?

The radius rod bushings are old but seem to be fitting snug.

With the front end jacket up there appears to be nothing loose or binding when I steer it back and forth.

Any suggestions?

jsut came in from running chain saw so my hands are swollen and tired, but suggest good front end greasing first to see what that does and I forget the order, but something about load on suspension allows lower kingpin grease fitting to take grease better and load off tire allows upper to take grease better or I might have it backward as I truly can't recall right now. And, I'd turn wheel side to side really good while greasing also and grease all other zeirdt fittings while there. Use air gun sure works better than manual grease gun and harbor griehg has them for $20 or less
