Shift Tube and Large Spring placement

Post by qmcdugan »

I was looking at my LMC catalog and noticed that in their depictions of the 2 parts on page 98 of the latest Catalog, the spring is located at the upper end of near the steering wheel.
If that is correct then my shift tube had been installed up side down by the previous owner. And now also by me. So it's got me wondering just what is correct. The shift tube with the Flange up doesn't make sense. Again looking at LMC's pictures. What would keep the spring from sliding to the bottom of the column?
My attempts to seat the shift tube into the shift lever at the bottom have failed. Finally I fished the spring out and installed the tube with the Flange down (at the lower end), reassembled the column and took her out for a test run. It seems to work okay, but I know that the column is not assembled correctly.
Any ideas any one? :?
