steering column angle?

Post by capeclassics »

As I was be boppin down the road the other day in my '70 Sport Custom I happened to notice that as I looked down at the steering column it appears to be angled toward the driver door rather than being at a 45 degree angle from the dash.Just curious,is this the way its supposed to be or do I need to take corrective action??Thanks

Hey capeclassics,

Mine does the same thing.
I'm not sure if there is an adjustment that can be or not.
The bottom of the column is connected to the steering box...
there's no adjustments there and the inside is bolted to the support under the dash...
no side to side adjustment there, though you can move the housing itself in or out a little bit.
I'll be watching this post ... curious to see what others say

I may be wrong but i think it's suppose to be that way in case of a wreck the column will collapse to one side as to prevent your chest from taking the full force of the impact. Think i read that somewhere.

I do recall seeing somewhere where Keith advised it is that way from the factory. But I can't recall the reason.

The reason is maybe to place the driver more to left side, to give two passengers more room in width.
Check out the link below. The top view shows the angled centerline of the steering column.

looks to be about a 4 degree angle from the line of the frame rail. Its the way Ford designed these trucks, I would guess to give the Ford truck that "passenger car" feel, meaning wider front seat/shoulder room.
