Rust, WTF?

Post by 04stangman »

Sup guys. heres the deal. Last fall I sanded my whole bed with a drill, a sander and by hand. Washed it good, then I painted it with rustolem rust preventor paint. So, After sitting outside in a hard Utah winter the bed is not looking any better now, then when I painted it? Also that 1/2 inch space above the winshield and the roof? Is there any cure for good rust prevention? If I coated the bed with a rhino liner the rest would just eat the bed from the underside? Any good ideas?

probably a better paint would have not rusted like that. rustolem is ok on some things but not for what you used it for.

Use Por15 or Rustbullet on the bed... it doesn't have to be perfect on the inside.

There was a lot of discussion here at some point a while back about paint and Rustbullet vs. POR vs. Rustoleum, etc. There was a link to where some dude did a big study. It was inconclusive, but you could see the Rustoleum was porous and allowed rust. It didn't stand up to UV, salt, etc. very well.

Rustoleum is fine for patio furniture, but probably not the best choice for a vehicle. They're each subjected to completely different operating environments. ;)

When I did my 68 years back the bed floor was all surface rust.
I cleaned it up really good with a wire cup brush on a angle grinder, sanded it with 80 grit on a D/A then coat it with Permatex Extend.
It's a milky white chemical that does exactly what it says. Anything rusty turned into a hard black shell like finish. Did a primer surfacer over that and then painted. 4 years I had the truck nothing ever came back thru..
I'll use it again.
Here's the industrial version- http://www.devcon.com/devconfamilyprodu ... 0&catid=80
Should be able to find this locally- http://www.permatex.com/products/Automo ... atment.htm
Here's one source- http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(0xrdr ... ?SKU=86465
I wouldn't use the aerosol, get the brush on.

I wouldn't even use it there... our trucks aren't sealed super-tight, and the moisture causes a lot of rust from the inside out. :2cents:

Stopping the rust is key. If you just wire brush it you will not get into the poors and cracks enough to remove it all. The best way is to use something like Eastwoods Rustconverter or POR-15s Metel=Ready. Both will stop the chemical reaction.

After that you need to use a good paint. Again, Eastwoods, POR-15, Rustbullet, etc...

Something to remember about Rustoleum is that it contains fish oils.
If you ever want to go back and use real paint, good chance you'll have adhesion problems.

Those spray on bed liners are great, but its got to be a rust free application
to start. I had my 98 box done and there was just slight rust in a few spots. They were treated before application, but still bleed through the bed liner
I've had enough and I'm not alone
