I will start to say that I have read the power steering FAQ section before posting this. I have yet to go look to see what kind of steering box I have.
I have a P350 Step van ice cream truck I am rebuilding, and want to add power steering. The Ford 350 chassis, with a 300 straight 6 motor. I was wondering if someone knows of a complete kit I can buy to convert this. My mechanic said he can get everything, except the power steering bracket, and I am sure I can get one if that is the only problem, but a complete kit would be better.
Any tips, or anything to help would be appreciated.
complete kits are probably not available. you will probably have to buy it here and there. i doubt any f100 or f250 steering boxes will fit that thing.
you probably need a E 350 box to bolt in place of the manual box. The bracket you need is for pump ? If so it should be easily obtained from any 300 6 /w power steering. What year is the chassis. Have you checked Millls supply http://www.millsupply.com/. I have a fleet of P30 I help maintain, but they all Chebies.
Yes thats the problem, I don't know what I am looking for. I went to Carquest, and Auto Zone today, in hopes they could bring up a pic, NO LUCK.
I searched the internet for a couple hours, and the Fordification article was the most informative info I found.
I need to replace the steering box, it is shot, so I was hoping the power steering thing would be easy, but I may just toss the idea if I can't get more info. My 67 250 steering looks completely different that the P350.
I would think the early Econoline / Falcon vans might be something to look into due to the flat front-ends they had on them. I have seen a few in the yard here over the past year and everything is so compact in the small space the motor has to sit in between the driver and the passenger seats. Even the compressor on a 302 model Econoline back then stood up on it's end due to the lack of space in there. I don't recall seeing one with power steering so far though. I don't know if they came in a 250 or 350 series either. I know they had motor home models though because a neighbor around the corner used to have one.
(edit) If you can see if you can get under there and get a casting number off of the steering gearbox. The Ford casting number MAY tell you a lot if the number is the same as another vehicle (i.e. a truck casting number, a large truck casting number, a large car casting number, and so on...)
Too many projects, too little time, but.. lovin' it!

I gave up on the power steering, when we took off the steering box, and the 5 foot rod all the way to the steering wheel came out with it.
I sent it out to be rebuilt, and it has been gone for over a week, and they couldn't find part, until last week and they had to be shipped from Ca. They told me it would be between $500 and $800 to rebuild it DAMN that hurts. but what could I do, I need it running soon.
It was a TRW steering box.
