Axle Pivot Bushing

Post by OldRedFord »

How do I remove the old ones? And how do I get the new one in.

Also, did these trucks have 2 shocks in the front on each side?

I drilled the rubber out, then beat the metal "case" out with a punch. I pressed the new ones in with a vice and 3 pound adjustment tool. Get you new bushings in hand before you start so you can see what you might have to use over. I think some types require you to use the metal "case".

Others will chime in with more info.

You should definitely try the Search feature for older posts on this... But,
The general opinion is that its best to totally pull the the I beams to replace those - meaning jack up front frame, remove wheels/hubs/brakes/springs/tie rod ends and also pull the radius arms out (may want to change those radius bushings while you're at it). It is wise to buy your replacements *before* removing the old bushings - some come with new metal sleeves, some re-use the original sleeves. If you get new ones with sleeves, the sleeves have to be pressed out/in (w/shop press!). Most poly replacements re-use the original sleeves and are pretty easy to install - minus the task of removing all the old rubber without damaging the old sleeves :)
As for shocks, I think only one per side was standard issue.

I have always torched em out, light em up and sit back and let em do there thing. No damage to the outer casing that way, you can take some sandpaper after they fall out and clean everything up.

make sure you get the correct ones. if you get polyurithane the out shells have to come out as well or they will not fit.
