Wide tires take more fuel to roll (more rolling friction) than skinny tires. But!! They also give a better ride, more solid "footprint" and best of all they look great!! I know I am kinda old school on this subject, but back in my day  wide tires were all we ran. Skinny tires are fine if that is your cup of tea, but you need to make sure you get at least enough to support the weight of your vehicle. Too small tires can be dangerous.

Just my opinion

Yep, Thin tires give the best mileage... less friction contact with the road = better milage. also less HP to get them rotating.

This is a double edge sword. Yeah you have less of a footprint, but it's that footprint that's going to stop you and keep you from sliding in slick conditions.

Years ago I went from skinny 7.50x16s to fatter 31x10.50x16,5 and lost about 1-1 1/2 mpg.

You definitely get better gas mileage by using thiner and small diameter tires. Wider tires means more mass to get rotating and to stop them from rotating, but they do offer a better ride and look way better; especially if your truck is lowered.

Tall and skinny wins in every respect expect dry traction.

I've got a set of 34X6.50X17 bias retread mud terrains on widow makers that came on my 70 when I bought it. They will go anywhere and work extremely well except the first few miles when it's cold out.
