Brake problem

Post by OldRedFord »

The distribution block (I guess this is the proper name for this) that has the 2 lines from the master cylinder running to it....well its leaking. Where can I get a new one, or can it be fixed?

depends on where it is leaking from. If it is just the threaded fittings leaking, then teflon tape on them MAY seal it up. If not, then you might need to replace the fitting, But that means replacing the hard line that is at the end of that fitting, or at the least, cutting the line and putting a new fitting on (provided you have the slack in that line to do it).

Not sure, but as far as I know, the original distribution blocks haven't been available for years, new. That means a junkyard unit. Hopefully someone else will know if they are still available OEM though.

There are aftermarket alternatives though (adjustable brake proportioning valves) available from most performance sites, like summit, jegs, etc.

yes i dont see any other place that it could leak from. i would check the threads on the fittings and se if they are stripped or just need some teflon tape on them. if all else fails i do have one of those i just took off a parts truck .

If it isleaking at the threads where the brake lines go on, don't teflon tap it. That is dangerous. Brakes operate at too high pressure for the tape. You can try to snug the fittings, to see if it helps, but if not, the flares are leaking. The flare is what holds the fluid from leaking, so you will need to re-flare the lines if they are still solid enough. If not, buy new lines. I also have a spare, so used ones aren't very hard to locate.

If the threads are ok on the distribution block then you probably don't need to replace it.

Assuming the threads are good on both the distribution block and the brake line fittings, you may be able to re-seat the flare by loosening the fitting and tightening it back down a couple times. Be sure not to over tighten it, the seal is made between the seat and the flare, not at the threads, so its not like a pipe fitting.

If it still leaks you may need to either replace the brake lines or cut off the ends and re-flare them. Brake lines take a double flare and can be a little tricky, so if you're not familiar with it I would recommend getting help from someone who has done it before or taking it in to a brake $hop.

Or if you want to tackle it yourself, go get a double flaring tool and read the excellent tutorial Keith has on this site on how to properly make a double flare.

Now, if the threads are indeed screwed up on your distribution block, then I would go to a junk yard to look for another. I am unaware of an after market replacement for distribution blocks. This is assuming that we are not getting our lingo messed up, you do have drum/drum brakes, not disk/drum, correct? If you have disk/drum then Paul is correct in that there are many after market options for a proportioning valve.

I do have drum brakes all around. I think NPD has a block.
