PS cooler?

Post by kaptnkaos »

hey Guys...

What's the skinny on a power steering cooler.
Are they a real benefit or just an eye sore in the engine compartment???

Any thoughts or input on this will be appreciated.

Thanks guys,
Allan

I don't know if they are necessary, but I am sure thry help some. If you don;t want an eyesore under the hood, you can always use a 73 up 4x4 like is on my 67. It mounted perfectly along the main crossmember and you can't even see it from under the hood.

Use anything you want, get a cooler off a 90s E or F serries and put it down in the frame rail somewhere.
I didn't have one in Alaska but I would reccomend it for pump life.

:yt:

Cooler fluid in the pump means the seals and bearings in the pump wont wear out as fast.

Thanks Guys

I certainly like the idea of making the pump last longer.
I'll have ta keep my eyes open for a frame mountd one.
Is there any reason that a stock pump mounted one couldn't be mounted on the frame down by the steering pump???

Thanks again

i don't think it has as much surface area as the later ones. in fact my 93 didn't have one at all, it just had about 6ft. of line that was clamped to the front cross member back and forth two or three times. i'll see if i have a pic

if you look below the crank pully in this pic you can see the power steering line snaking around in the front of the cross member.

Kaptn, check the FE and 460 powered 2 WD dents. They had the coolers mounted inside the frame between the front bumper and engine crossmember.I put one on my 67 when I did the p/s swap.I'd post a pic but the cab and front end are tarped with about a foot of snow on top of them.

The ones I was referring to is shaped like the crossmember and are one big loop. To me they blend in better than any I have seen, because they set below the engine. Also, they look like plain tube, so they hide well against the crossmember.

Pretty much anything you can find at the junkyard and clean it up, even an aftermatket (Hayden) tranny cooler would work great.
On my first hotrod I used a condenser off an old refrigerator for a tranny cooler.

Hey Guys,

I have an auto tranny cooler that came off of the '71 CS...
That might work.. It would be pretty easy to plumb in or sure.
I also have an oil cooler from the same rig... since I'm using tha radiator support from the '71 all the holes are even drilled...

Now another question comes to mind...
What kinda hose should I use? fuel line?

I roll down the window, or roll up my sleeves to cool the power steering.
