Am I missing parts?
My manual steering box is broken. The plate on the side opposite the frame has cracked.
The real question though is:
Should there be some kind of bushing or bearing between the frame rail and the pitman arm?
There is one shown on the diagram of the Ross 375, but it is unclear weather it belongs between the frame rail and pitman arm, or if it goes between the steering box and frame rail.
By the way, this is a 67 highboy with manual steering...
Thanks

try this. i am not sur on 4x4's but i would say there is a bracket between the frame rail and the mounting for th steering box on 2wd. so why wouldnt there be the same spacer on a 4wd.

Thanks for the input, but I am not really that worried about what is between the frame and the steering box. I think there may be something missing between the pitman arm and the frame. My concern is that with no bushing or bearing between the pitman arm and the frame, there is the potential for a lot of axial loading on the steering box.

re: Am I missing parts?
I just removed the standard sterring box off my '68 CS, the box mounted directlty to the frame.
No spacer or plate... just 3 bolts
Hope that helps...

I think you guys all have 2wd on the brain. 4x4's are completely different.
The highboy steering box has a vertical pitman arm and a horizontal sector.
What I'm not following at all is you're account of how there is a loose plate somewhere. The setup is real system if it's factory.
There is no bushing in the frame rail. The sector shaft passes through the frame and the pitman is attached on the outside.

Yes, on the F250-F350 4WDs it does:fordman wrote:the pics i have seen the steering box was bolted to the inside or outside of the frame. your saying the steering box now goes throught the frame.

I'm pretty sure there isn't anything in the frame hole...it just passes straight through.

Yes! That is exactly what I have got! The broken plate is actually on the oposite side of the steering box. The problem is that the sector has taken a large axial load at some point and has broken the plate that holds it in place on the passenger side of the steering box (labeled 3580 in the exploded view diagram):
http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... ng-box.jpg
This allows the sector to slop left and right and is probably really dangerous. I was going to pull the thing apart and weld plate 3580 back together, but I was afraid it would just break again if it is not assembled right and be harder to fix next time.
It still seems strange to me that that plate is the only thing to absorb axial loading on the sector shaft (unless there is something I am missing in the diagram). That is why I thought there might be a missing piece somewhere...
Thanks for taking so much time with this already, I really apreciate it.
