power steering conversion ?

Post by kaptnkaos »

Got a question about swapping the pitman arm...

When you're swapping the pitman arm (changing a new style one with an old style one)
Is there a right or wrong way to put the new one on??
Should I mark the shaft some way so the new arm goes on in the same place as the one I'm replacing, or does it matter???

Thanks guys...

you want it to go back on th same way because the box will bottom out going one way if you dont. it has to line up properly so that you have a equal turn radius each way.

Thanks Fordman...

That's what I thought, but I wasn't 100% positive...

I was't sure if the box would do 360's or not... :D
I haven't pulled the pitman arm off yet...
Is it keyed somehow so it will only go on one way or should I mark a center line from the old one?

Thanks again...

i dont know if the saginaw is keyed but the bendix is kind of keyed. it has three or four flat spots kind of. they are just wide splines is what they are. when i removed one from a bendix i didnt get it on right i thought i did. but it woudlnt turn to the right for anything.

If memory serves me...yes, they are.
One flat on the shaft, one in the arm.
Kinda can't get them wrong.
