The overall width is immaterial....to a degree. You can install a rearend with a narrower (or wider) overall width that what it came with stock, you'll just have some modifications required to make it fit, such as the spring and shock mounts.
fordman: the LTDs were coil-sprung, so if it IS from a full-size car, there were definitely some mods done to make it fit your truck.

I suppose I would have to fabricate some shock mounting brackets... Just redrilling my axles is sounding better by the minute.convincor wrote:Looks like 71-73 Mustang axles??
9. 1973-1979 Ford pickup 9-inch housing width: 59¾"
* The 1972, and earlier, Ford half-ton pickup's 9-inch rear end could be used in the '71-'73 Mustangs, (if no suitable donor from a car can be found), if some modifications to the rear end housing, brake drums, and lug spacings were made:
1. The spring perches would have to be moved from the the top of the truck's axle housing tubes to the underside of the tubes, and placed at the correct 43-inch distance apart.
2. The truck's brake drums would have to be re-drilled to the correct 4½" lug spacing to fit the '71-'73 Mustang's pattern.
3 The axleshaft's wheel flanges would also have to be re-drilled to accommodate the 4½" lug spacing.
4. For better appearances, the lower shock mounting brackets would also need to be removed from the Ford truck's 9-inch rear end housing tubes.
(** Similar modifications would apply to '66-'77 Ford Bronco 9-inch rear ends, to install in the pre-'71 Mustangs).

why drums? get some newer mustang rotors that slide on . they will just slide onto your axle. you with just need to get some calipers and build some brakets for them.convincor wrote:I'll be watching this thread.. Thinking of them same only doing front disc.
Maverick and Granada's used the same wheel bearings.
Maybe the only difference in these rotors was the lug pattern??
Not sure on diameter? Once I have my spindles I may try them
As for axles, I'd think just order a set of custom. $240 pr and redrill drums.

I would agree that you should think about do a disk brake upgrade to the front. Then you could just get the 5 x 4.5" in the kit. Since you are going to a smaller spacing in the rear the you will not be making the axles weeker. You will be adding more edge margin, so it will be better. I have see 500-600hp drag cars running redrilled axles, so I think you will be OKcustomcrewcab wrote:why drums? get some newer mustang rotors that slide on . they will just slide onto your axle. you with just need to get some calipers and build some brakets for them.convincor wrote:I'll be watching this thread.. re: Switching from 5x5.5 to 5x4.5 lug pattern
I myself am doing disc up front with 77 spindles. The rear will also go disc but not just yet.
The rear i'm not worried about.
I need to buy a new set of rotors for the front as it is. I'd like to be able to buy something already 5x4-1/2
I hear 80-83 f100 rotors work.. Anyone done it???

I'm wanting to do something similar to this also & have come up short in the searches. The only problem is that I'm working with an F-250. I'm either going to put it on a factory SWB frame or chop the one I have. Is there a difference in between 1/2 ton & 3/4 ton spindles? Could I put these pre 72 galaxie rotors on 3/4 ton spindles & then put a car 9 inch under it (I know I'll have to move perches & stuff)

No, the F100 and F250 spindles are completely different.

Well my goal is to end up with Altima SE-R wheels on my next truck. Were there alot of differences inbetween kingpin diameters? Are there differences inbetween drum & disc spindles? I have half ton spindles but they're drums.

per a previous post the 73 Galaxie rotors are 5x5"
Not 5x4-1/2"
Not sure yet but I hear 80-83 f100 rotors may work.(5x4-1/2")
They use same wheel bearings and same brake pads.
I'm trying to get 5x4-1/2" rotors on 77 f100 spindles.
There in stock at local parts store and will check them out in the next day or two.

re: Switching from 5x5.5 to 5x4.5 lug pattern
I have heard if you take the pass or driver side axle shaft from a 72 torino that one of them is the same lenght as a 67-72 f100 shaft but you have to use either two drivers side shafts or two pass side. One or the other. I was wondering about using an 80-82 rotor. Let me know what you find out.
