Welcome James!

I just want to offer my services to everybody, since I live so close to the Canadian border I speak half way decent Canadian. So if any one needs an interpreter, I would be happy to oblige. In the meantime, here are some helpful hints for understanding our neighbors to the north.

Diphthongs
combining two vowels to make one
used in words with "out" (eg. aboot a-bow-t)
used in words with "ue" (eg. Tuesday Tooz-dee)

Changing vowel location
ie. diffurnt, cumpnee

Silent vowels
dropping the vowel if it starts with a vowel (eg. mazin', maircan)

Replacing Y with two E's
ie. Mundee, Calgree

Joining prepositions with words
when using a preposition (eg. to, in, until) combine it with the nearest word (eg. coupla, uptilate)

Talking to a Canadian can be confusing at best. Here is a list of their more common folksy sayings. When at a loss for words, toss one of these into the conversation. Guaranteed to impress.

"He's so thin he has to stand twice in the same place just to make a good shadow"
"She was pure as snow, but she drifted"
"Dirty as a duck's puddle"
"Thin? Seen more meat on a hockey stick"
"She had more chins than a chinese phonebook"

And every once in a while, they will throw a word in to a sentence that pretty much put us Americans into a seizure like state, on the floor, blowing nose bubbles. I will list some of those that I have been able to decipher. (please read with caution):

"bearus" (bare-us) To disconcert "I was bearused when my pants fell down"

"beauty" (bue-tee) Statement of approval, "Would you like a drink chap?" "Beauty"

"beeracrat" (beer-a-crat) Person who puts in time to govern Canada "Those damn beeracrats"

"choob" (choo-buh) TV "I'm watching Sheriff Lobo on the choobe"

"church key" (chur-ch kee) bottle opener "I use my church key often"

"climb it" (cli-mit) Weather: Canada has three kinds wet, hot, cold "Canada has such a nice climb it"

"Yay" (yeh) Words used to describe distance or size "Yay big, yay wide"

"Youse" (use) second person plural "Do youse have an appointment?"

Ok, all joking aside, welcome to the greatest bump site on the web. :fr:

Hey Seattle67, you forgot the most important word in the Canadian language!!!
"Eh?" it mostly means "do you agree?", but can mean almost anything.
You must have heard that one before since you live so close to Canada and visit all the time, eh?

Your right, I didn't mention "Eh", I figured everyone already knew that one.

I used to spend a lot more time in Canada then I have been recently. Just don't seem to have the free time I used to.

Canada is an incredibly beautiful country. I spent a lot of time enjoying the night life of Vancouver, camping on the north end of Vancouver Island, and skiing at Apex and Big White. Good memories. 8)

I hope to make it back to the "Great White North" again soon!
