68 f250 4x4 info needed

Post by 68f250blues »

I am wondering if anyone can tell me if there is a book on what year ford truck parts will fit my 68 f250 4x4, are the only years 67-72 or are there more (75-79) - I would like to convert to front power disk breaks and power steering - I currently have a 360 ci, manual steering and 4 drum breaks, I am also thinking about taking the 4 speed manual trans out and putting in a auto trans. thanks for your help... 68f250blues

I've gotten started on compiling an 'interchange manual', but I've only gotten as far as the sheetmetal:

The front differential from a dentside truck ('73-'79) will bolt right up to your '68. Find one with disc brakes...converting a drum-brake differential to disc is very difficult and costly, and in some cases impossible.

Bumpside 4WD trucks never got power steering of any kind. The early dentside trucks used a power-assist setup which can be used, but they're quirky and prone to leaks. I'd suggest going with an actual power steering box, something only used on '78-'79 4WDs. However, the frame will require some minor modifications to fit the PS box.

Alternatively, you can either fabricate (or purchase) brackets to let you use the 2WD steering box in your 4WD. Here's how one member did this modification:

I have some pics of my PS swap in my progress thread at the bottom of my signature. As far as a disk brake axle you just need to find a 44 or a 60 out of a dentside f250 they will all bolt up and you have to use the brake porportioning valve off of the same disk setup, and swap in the matching MC and a booster. You can mix and match but it's all about the same. Best bet is to find a donor truck with everything on it in a junkyard.

Most of you answers will be found in the 4x4 forum if you just browse through some threads.
