Split Rims, worth keeping?
I'm transferring body parts from a 70 F-250 to my 68 F-250. The 70 has split-rims all they way around. My brother says the split rims are better for towing and hauling, which is what I used the 68 for. Is there truly a benefit in the split rim design? Will I have a problem if I take them to a general tire store like Les Schwab and do a transfer as far as working with the split rim design? Not sure if there is a benefit versus the cost. Thanks.

Hey tboneshep...
I'm not sure if there is any real "benefit" to keeping split rims or yer rig.
I have had both on my '68 CS, and really prefer the regular style rims because I can run tubeless radials,
which gives me much better ride and handling.

it is illegal for many tire stores to deal with split rims because of the potential dangers. many will turn you away or make you buy new rims with your tires. they do offer a better bead seal but are dangerous to work on if you don't know what your doing. honestly i would run your tires down and buy new rims and tires in one shot.

re: Split Rims, worth keeping?
Most Les Schwabs have tire cages for splits and any commercial truck tire shop can do them, usually about $9 for mounting. Still, the rims have no value and regular 16" wheels are dang near free, I'd toss 'em.

I second that most shops around here balk at split rims on light trucks .ToughOldFord wrote: Still, the rims have no value and regular 16" wheels are dang near free, I'd toss 'em.
