F350 dually camper special frame differences from F250

Post by Roadrash »

Hi Guys,
I'm new to this forum, but not new to ford trucks as I've owned several '78-'79 broncos. What I have is a '69 F350 camper special with a dual rear axle, built in '69 as a motorhome. What I'm looking at is replacing the cab with a crew cab. What I want to know is are the frames different with respect to depth (are the F350 frames deeper) and gauge of steel (are the F350 frames thicker). I realize the crew cab will not fit on my F350 frame, and therefore would need to graft the front half of the F250 crew cab frame to my existing F350 frame. Are the F350 frames stronger than the F250 frames.

The F350 frames are a slightly thicker steel by a few thousands...but I seriously doubt whether it's enough to warrant all the extra cost and hassle to just keep the back end. Were you planning on putting a truck bed on the back? If so, why not just find a true crewcab frame and use the whole thing, that way everything will be a bolt-on, including your DRW (if you wanted to keep it)?

The F350 does have a longer wheelbase too. I'm assuming your truck was manufactured as a cab-and-chassis? Those came in two wheelbase lengths: 135" and 159". You'd have to shorten it to fit a standard bed on there. Seems to me that you'd simply have a lot less work involved by simply using a factory crewcab frame.

Thanks guys for the responses. I've been on the road couldn't repost until now. My f350 is the cab/chassis with the longer wheel base. I don't think I'll be able to locate a crew cab frame with the same length of frame behind the cab, and therefore was considering grafting the back half of my frame to a crew cab frame. I haven't even located a crew cab frame yet, and was under the assumption that they were mostly f250s, which is why I was curious about the frame strength. I'll try and get a photo to post to give you an idea at what I'm thinking about. Thanks again guys.
