rear drum shoes

Apparently I have had either an aneurism or stroke since last time I did rear drums, because I am mad enough to smack my forehead with a 4 pound hammer until I pass out. Is there a webcite that steps one through this, or does anyone have a photo that shoes rear shoes installed without drum on? Last car I did was chevy and had no problem, but for some reason I'm fighting a losing battle on 68 bump 1/2 ton that I MUST win! I see the shiny ridges shoes rest on, lightly greased w/special grease, have all brackets/springs going right, but cannot get drum on over shoes even without adjuster between lower portion! Whenever I try to rattle or move rear (long) shoe, it pops off the large bolt up top and have to wrestle that back down. Front short shoe moves readily. Help me during my obvious mental block please. have you goit the little keeper springs in place?


lmost sounds like you have your soes stuck in the groove towards the outside of the backing plate. tey need to be a little closer to the center of the hub area. also do you have them maybe too far back on the resting point(where it gets bigger/thicker?

do you have that t shape thing that goes over top of the shoes before the springs go on?

sounds like you dont have your set pins in. its a spring with two "cup washers" and a pin that comes through and locks the shoe down into place. Still able to move it though. Do you have the e-brake hooked up? Do you have the cable coming around the back of the round bracket to the little clicker for the star wheel? that sorta holds the shows together.....

sounds like u just have them too far apart, maybe one in the ridge, or even both. Your top halves should hook up to the top round bar piece and run pretty close to perfectly parallel to the backing plate, if they are cocked much at all, you set them up wrong. Do you have one together, and one apart?

Here is what I have done, have greased shiny ridges on backing plate (3 frontside, 3 backside) with silicone brake grease, greased large round boss shoes ride on at top and have short shoe on front, long shoe on back (new shoes, Bendix). Have tops of shoes under the large "t" shaped peice of metal. On top of that is round cable that goes to emergency plate at bottom of rear shoe. On top of that is black spring which goes to top of rear shoe into a kinda c-shape peice that fits into a hole near top.
On top of black spring is orange spring (going from memory here) which goes to top of front shoe (short). Below that, shoes fit into cylinder on both sides, below that is a funny shaped bar that fits into both sides, front (short) side has a spring. On bottom front shoe to emergency plate is blue spring. Under rear shoe (long) is metal emergency bar attached to top of rear shoe with a c-shape clip and emergency spring loaded cable fits into bottom of emergency bar. Both front and rear shoes back edge sitting on shiny ridges I first mentioned, BUT, front shoe willingly moves when I grab it, rear shoe not moving and from looking, you can see rear shoe asbestos material much closer to edge of backing plate. When I grab rear shoe to try to move closer to hub, it'll pop real loud and top mounting point will pop off that huge bolt and be on top of it and I'll have to wrestle it back down into place.
Even without star adjuster in bottom (between shoes), can't get them close enough to slide drum over.

Uhhh... are they the right size? There are many different sizes (dia and width)... any chance the counter monkeys gave you the wrong ones (or they were boxed wrong)?

Keith, I cannot thank you enough. Everything looks exactly as I have it, EXCEPT I just now thought I recall there were some holes not drilled in these replacement shoes that were in the ones I took off (and as in your photo's too). I now wonder (since I've taken them on and off a million times) surely they must've given me wrong application. Dad burn COUNTER MONKEYS!!! (that is funny...and you're right it don't matter who you are). I know they gave me the wrong axle seal 3 times in a row and I finally went to different store and they got it right first shot. i'm going to home and lay them over ones I took off and see, I'm not speculating wrong diameter (maybe by 1/2 inch or so). just wanted to post, so that all that helped me know, it was the wrong da#$ brake shoes, went got another set (same place. let's call it "future advance parts", so as not to bash, and yet another problem. Went got 1st set from, let's call it, "Luck O the Irish Auto Parts", half the price, fit right the FIRST time. Drove the truck around some. Those da#$ "Future" counter monkeys"!!!! The old Banjo.....

I guess mine are not painted then. They are all silver and black. dust has turned them black.
