How to remove leaf spring bushing?

Post by mnagatani »

Has anyone out there removed and replaced the bushings on the main leaf spring? I just ordered a replacement set and was wondering if I can do it myself or get a shop involved to do it. Thanks.

Burn them out....

Some new bushings require the sleeve from the old bushing be left in place, so be careful and make sure you don't need it before you take them out.

Pressing them out is the proper and fastest way. If you've got access to a press (or don't mind paying someone else to do it) then that's the way to go.

If you've just got basic handtools at home and want to do it yourself, you can either follow eric's suggestion of burning them out, or do what I did, which was drill them out. I drilled about a dozen or so holes all around the bushing perimeter, and then knocked the rubber and center tube out. I was planning on installing polygraphite bushings, so I needed to keep my outer shells. If you're replacing them with stock rubber pieces, you can then remove the shell by twisting/distorting it with a pair of ViceGrips or maybe a hammer and punch.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I just ordered the new bushings and will not get them until next week. For now I will see if I can get them out myself.

I've got another related leaf spring question. Does anyone know what is a good source to replace the sleeves that hold the leaf springs together? Mine were completlely wasted and need to get some new ones. There are two of them on each spring. Thanks again!

Bushing removed with ease

Post by mnagatani »

Ok guys, I got a suggestion online on how to remove the bushing. Use a screwdriver and pry open the eyelet. Once that is done, the bushing comes out with a few hits with a hammer. The whole process was very quick and easy! Picture included
