Is there some sort of seal that is used ont he back of the hub, where it meets the spindle pin (i believe is what it is). Theres also a bearing in there, how do I get that out?

Remove the spindle nut washer outter bearing re install nut a few threads then drag drum off spindle the nut will grab the inner bearing and pop it and seal out. Most times seal will saved for reuse if it's any good to begin with.

Wes's suggestion usually works great. Not sure why it's not working for you, but you can also lay the drum/hub down and carefully tap the inner bearing with brass drift to pop the seal out. Just be careful not to booger up the bearing roller cage. If you bend or tear up the seal at all replace it, don't re-use it.

I got it out cleanly. A wooden dowel works well! Just got 5 new studs, gotta return/get the other 5 in the morning. After that, I am going to find a machine shop to press everything in. I can't figure out how to get the hub out though....Any ideas? It almost looks like it's attached permanantly. Maybe a press that a machine shop uses will get it done though!

FoMoCo wrote:My 67 has the narrow front drums. When I redid the front braks I too had to pull the drum/hum of as one peice. However, to remove the drum from the hub I just threaded the old lug nuts back onto the removed assembly and just dropped it on a steel workbench a couple of times. The lug nuts were threaded on just enought to protect the tips of the studs. For reinstalation I just torqed the lugs down after putting every thing back on the truck.

Another way I have removed hubs was to use the lug nut trick and lay the drum on a work bench with lugs pointing up and placed some steel stock over all the nuts and a whack witha big old hammer. Of course I would never reuse those drums.

I am a little confused here...how would smacking the lugs, release the hub? If they lugs are pointing up, the drum isn't going anywhere, only the lugs. Im off to try again.

welp, got them off! finally. should have them pressed all back together tomorrow. If I have the machine shop clean the hub and all real good, do I JUST pack the bearing pieces, or do I pack the whole hub with grease? Or atleast be generous with everything?

BUt the studs are pressed into the hub not the drum so by driving the lugs down the hub should release from the drum!!!

Yes pack each bearing completely. If you look in the hub you will see a channel/trough between the 2 races fill that even to edge of the races, with grease. Keep the center open. Put a thin coat of grease in the dust cap as well.

just my 2 cents, but i thought on most the drum was held onto the front hub by 2 or 3 screws, and the wheel studs are pressed into the hub not the drum. you should be able to slide the drum off , now , if the old drum was on the hub for a long time, it maybe a bugger to get off. but you shouldn't have to press the wheel studs out unless you are replacing the hub.
