3/4 to 1/2 ton swap

Post by Stumpfoot »

I have a 67 f100 I am doing the power brake swap on and noticed my donor truck had a bent front axle and radius arm, I have a line on the same parts but they are off of a 72 f250, I was wondering if they would work on my f100 if I just moved the whole thing over (axle/radius arm/spindle etc...) Also if they do work will my truck set any different?

Don't know if your truck will set differently (probably will, but that's just a guess) but if you do the swap, you'll need all the steering linkage to go with the axles. Ford changed the linkage in late `71, as well as the brackets that go to the spindle/backing plates where the tie rods and drag link bolt up.

I just went through this sort of thing. Tried to put new `69 linkage on what I thought was a `68 set of axles. Turns out the axles (I-beams) were off a `72, and I couldn't adjust the tie rod in enough to get the wheels aligned properly. Ended up waiting to get the proper axles rebuilt to rebuild the rest of the front end on my truck.

You can bolt the entire F250 front suspension under your truck and just use your F100 springs if you want, to keep it from setting differently. However, any difference between the F100 and F250 springs is going to be fairly minimal anyway (depending on the GVW rating) so there really shouldn't be much, if any, noticeable difference in ride height if you were to use the F250 springs.

As stated, you'd end up with an 8-lug front-end and a 5-lug rear-end, unless you also swap in the F250 rearend to get the 8-lug rears.

And, as Paul stated, if you go with the '72 front end with the steering components, be sure to also grab the '72 steering box, or at least the Pitman arm off of it, to get everything to properly mate up.

However, while I can understand your wanting to save money, I'd strongly suggest just holding out on the disc brake swap until you can find the correct F100 parts. You're going to be much happier in the long run and not negatively affect the resale value of your truck.

I got the truck over to start pulling parts and I found this...(looking thru the right wheelwell to the driver's side)

is this what yours looks like? Is this what they are supposed to look like? Or are they both bent?
I can't sell it to ya if it's the same as yours (bent or not).

mine doesnt look as bad as that one. But as far as how they are supposed to look I am not sure, I think they have to be straight, maybe some input from some other posters might help.

I whent and looked at mine, but couldn't find the camera. The beams bend in 2 places. Starting from the Axle pivot Bushing they are straight out a few inches and then bend a little, they then correct back to straight and the Spring bolt and then twist in 2 directions to do the Caster and Camber.

I am going to go look for the camera again.
