New from VA, have a 1968 F100 4x4

I bought this truck from my wife's previous boss. I rebuilt the front and rear end and did some other work on it for him when we lived in Calif. He's retired now and didn't want it any more....

It's a 1968 F100 Custom Cab 4x4, 360", 4-speed NP435, Dana 21 T-case, D44 front / 9" rear with 3.50 gears, and coded for Lunar Green.

I never found any rust or bodywork all the crawling around I did under it. Gotta love the western vehicles.

The prev owner had it converted it to power steering and power brakes. But the PS conversion has some problems. The tie rod hits the pitman arm on big bumps. So I'm going to need to re-engineer that.

The PO is basically a family friend. He wanted me to help him sell this truck on ebay, but I told him I'd be interested. We agreed on low book value, $7500, and I spent another $1300 shipping it from Oregon to Virginia. Average book is $12,300 and high is $15k. I know a lot of trucks trade hands for less money but this is a terribly clean, solid western truck and we know the family history on it. Seller's happy, I'm happy, that's what I'd call a good deal. He sent me $19,000 in receipts on it. It costs big $$$ to farm out work which is what he did...but still it hurts to take that big of a loss. Ouch.

The truck was rebuilt/restored/repainted in 1998-1999 and it's had about 4000 miles put on it since then. I installed new leaf springs, coil springs, bushings, brake hoses, and a bunch of other small stuff for the prev owner in 2002-2003.

I have already picked up a Pertronix ignition for it. I fount slight wear in one u-joint and the center support bearing for the rear driveshaft could stand to be replaced. It also needs bearings & retainers in the steering column. So all that stuff is first on my list to do. After that...wiring for trailer brakes (I occasionally tow my 1970 Roadrunner when drag racing it) and the steering issue.

The steering thing is how I found this website. A good friend back home in Missouri (St Louis area) has a 72 Chevy pickup and I was telling him about the steering problem, and he pointed me to this website. I've already found a 1/2-ton of useful information here. Great site.
