Window regulator spring?
So I am cleaning up these window regulators and I thought of a question I couldn't answer. Why do they have those springs mounted on them? Is it to assist with raising the window, or what? Just wondering...

From what I remember on other regulators, the spring is there to fight gravity. Without it, there would be little stopping the gears from spinning free when the window is up, and thereby not holding it in place.
If you push down on the window in some cars you can get the hand crank to spin (force down greater than spring tension holding it in place)
All I know is remember that the system is under compression. When removing a bolt that held the arm in place on my 76 Mercedes, I caused it to swing 180 deg from bottom to top (right where my head was). Remember seeing stars when I got up a while later, and still have a make on my forehead…..
