69 F250 Transmission gasket change...how?

i have a 1969 F250 with a 360 and a C6 transmission. i plan to change the oil pan gasket and the transmission pan gasket and filter on tuesday, however, when i talked to my dad about this he told me that when he changed the transmission pan gasket on his car back in the day, that ball bearings fell out and he needed the manual to put them back in. i dont have the manual for my truck and i dont want to mess it up, does anyone know if this is going to happen to me?

Wow... No bearings will fall out when you take the pan off unless something is seriously wrong. He may have taken the valve body out.

Nothing should fall out besides fluid. Change the filter while you are there.

Loosen all the boltes and take the bolts out of one side then slowy lower that side to drain fluid.

There's a lot of fluid in there. Be careful this doesn't happen! Also, I would suggest you read all the posts about changing the oil pan gasket. It's not as easy as you might imagine and the posts will prepare you.

Great picture! Second to autos not holding up, I also hate them because nothing tastes worse than ATF, except maybe really burnt ATF.

If you can spare a couple bucks and a few minutes, installing a drain plug in the pan after it's out will make future fluid changes much cleaner.

The reason the factory didn't install them is they figured that some folks might just change the fluid without also changing the filter.

Yea, but don't get one from Jegs! $8 for the plug, another $11 for "handling" and another $19 for shipping for a grand total of over $41!!! I also tried to get one from Autozone in that they stock Jegs stuff. Jegs won't sell them the plug. I ended up throwing the pan back on there without one. Good luck and let us know.

I use weld in pipe bungs and a plug. Costs about $3 for everything.

How often would you recommend changing the auto. trans. fluid? I did it when I bought the veh. and it was clean. Could taking the pan off for a change of fluid also alert to any particles in there?

I dont know if these old trans pans have a magnet in them, but i would put one in the bottom of the pan before zipping it back together. All the new transmissions i have torn apart here at DCx have a mag, and it helps to diag the trans during tear down. If we see alot of steel on it, we know to look for something bad

hey all,
i change the filter, gasket and fluid with no problems. i ened up buying a hayes book that helpped a lot! it told me to remember to drain all the fluid out of the torque converter as well, which i had never heard about. it was really simple. o and there were no ball bearings and the was no magnet for those who were wondering.
