I just installed the polygraphite bushings in my pivot bushings too, and the machine shop I took mine to did the same thing to my shells. No big deal, I just bought another replacement rubber-type pair for about $20 and knocked out the rubber and kept the shells.
Oh, and just for the record, what you're calling "torsion bars" are actually the axles, or I-beams. Torsion bars are actually round bars used as front springs in some cars, most notably the '60s-'70s Mopars. But we knew what you were talking about.

Is my face red. Just call me butterfingers. I knew that. See what happens when you don't work on your truck for over a month.

Yea, I call them critters "axle pivot bushings"...I'm curious, how did you
gut the innerds from the new stock bushings? Did you knife/cut them out,
or maybe just blow em out with a torch? I don't really need to do it,
but just curious in case I ever do...MK

Yea Keith, you said you, "just knocked the rubber out". How did you do that. Did you press it out, burn it out or drill it out?

re: torsion bar bushing help
Well actually, since the machine shop was the one who boogered mine up, I just gave the bushings to him and told HIM to deal with it, so I'm not sure how he did it.
However, when I replaced the rear spring bushings with the polygraphite, I just drilled the rubber out. Look down at the bottom of this page:

re: torsion bar bushing help
Personally, I really don't think it makes a difference. However, I decided to err on the side of caution and had them installed the same way they came out...with the bushing flange towards the front of the truck.

re: torsion bar bushing help
I havent done this on my 67 yet but have on a later model F-150. I used a gear puller to push the inner bushingout then drilled hols in the rubber to weaken it, like Keith's project. Then a file, or dremel tool to finish up. I like the torch idea though!

re: torsion bar bushing help
I got my pivot bushings separated from the shells by drilling and using a hub puller - pushed the weakened inner bushing and rubber right out. Thanks guys.
And thanks Keith for the direction. insert from the front of the truck. Now if I can just figure which side of the I beams are the front. Remember, take pictures.
