welding

Post by 69bumptruck »

What's the "easiest" method of welding for a novice. I need to weld in a new cab mount, and a hole cut for a shifter, but I've never welded in my life. Can you rent welding equipment? Since it's under the body and won't be seen, I'm not too picky about it being pretty.

If you DO decide to do it yourself, grab some scrap metal and practice, and do some reading before you attack your truck! It's easy, but it's not a slam dunk, or everyone would do it.

Thanks for the info guys. After I posted, I found some other threads about welding. It's alittle more involved than I anticipated. Think I'll prep the area and find someone to do the actual welding, good suggestion Bando966.

For welding the sheet metal of a cab mount, use a 110V MIG machine. And try to use gas when you do it, not flux cored wire. The gas helps cool down the weld and reduces the chances of burning through the sheet metal.

Welding is very easy when you have the welder set up right. I am in Wichita, KS, if you ever come up this way I would be glad to give you a quick lesson. For about $600 you can get a 110 Mig welder that will do everything you need it to. I found the TSC is the best place to get the equipment and then find a place like LINWELD to get the gas.

It realy is not a hard as people make it out to be.

with a little practice it gets a lot easier. i always welded big stuff with stick welders until i got my wire feed, and was always a bit scared of melting thin metals but i really like it now.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

Do practice first. A MIG turned up too high can make a cutting torch. Don't touch the truck until you've laid down a few good beads on scrap.

for a first timer i would deffinetally use a MIG. if your just doing a couple of welds on the mounts, then i would rent a 220. It's not to hard really, just pull the trigger and rotate the gun in mini circles. Make sure you practice first. also make sure the welder is gas fed and not flux cored. you get a much better weld with more penetration.
