f350 disk brakes

Post by snake »

So can anyone tell me if a disk brake swap for a F350 works the same way as for the f100??

I would like to know the answer as well. It would seem, based on what I have read throughout this forum, that provided you can get the I-beams/spindles and the brake booster/MC from a 74+ F350 you can swap them in without too much trouble. However, that is just me putting a bunch of other posts together and reaching a conclusion. I would sure like to see this info confirmed before I run out and find the parts.

yeah thats what i'm doing with my 68 F250 is putting the 79 F350 front end (i also have a taller gear ratio (3.55) 35 spline D60 rear with 3 inch wide shoes) on it since i haul a 4300lb twin engine car to the track every now and then, (and my fat @$$ )

i have almost everything i need, just need to get reman calipers, hoses, and I beam pivot bushings to get it swapped onto the truck...(i know, i know, i'm soooooo close :D )

i have the proportioning valve from the truck as well but i need to get the master, booster (dual diaphram) and firewall bracket to complete that portion, i am not sure if i should have grabbed the brake pedal from the 79, but hopefully i didnt need it :hmm:

then all i have to worry about is the differences in the steering linkage taper/arms

i have alot of $ in parts so far, but only the best for my truck (TIMKEN etc) i figure do it right, do it once (aka no half-assing it as my gramps would say)

i am keeping the 79 460/c6 springs with the new brake setup but only because my trucks OE drivers side spring has a snapped coil i kinda hope it'll give me an extra half inch of height in the front to kinda level the truck out...

i am curious though if there's a market for good used drum brakes on here :hmm:

Has anyone ever actually done the disc swap on an F350? It says in the tutorial section that all the kingpins are the same size for the F350s. Does that mean its possible to swap just the spindles from a '79 F350 to a '69 F350 & not have to worry about kingpin differences? Just trying to make sure I'm understanding this stuff correctly.

iIRC the 66-74 have the same size everything and the 75-79 have the same size as each other but a 66-74 anything won't work with a 75-79.

to be sure check this page out

As long as the kingpin diameters are the same, they'll swap over just fine. The main thing you need to be aware of are the differences in the steering bumpstops. At least on the F100s, the bumpstops are molded into the spindle and I-beam. On most F250s and (I believe) F350s the bumpstops are actually just adjustable bolts, so that's really a non-issue. On the F100s, mixing certain years of spindles and I-beams with different styles of bumpstops will affect turning radius. However, since (I believe) the F350s steering bumpstops are adjustable, there should be no problem as long as the kinpins are the same diameter.

I'm just curious why you're asking, though....I'm assuming you'd be getting a disc setup from a junkyard truck, right? Trust me, you'd be WAY ahead in terms of labor involved by just dropping the entire front suspension. I'd say there's be a 99% chance you wouldn't be able to drive out the kingpins in the field to just salvage the spindles....whereas you can drop the entire front suspension in about 30 minutes with basic handtools. And when it comes time for installation in your truck, you're going to have to get the front suspension out anyway, so that you could install new kingpin bushings (assuming you'd be doing that, which simply makes sense since you've already gotten it torn down).

To be perfectly honest, the only reason I was asking was just out of pure curiosity. Never know when you might run across a screaming deal on just a set of spindles.......

Thanx for the feedback!

If you do run across that "screaming deal", be sure to make certain the spindles are for disc brakes. I'd hate for you to get stuck with someone else's leftover parts after doing their own disc brake swap. ;)

As I understand it, the F350 is different from the 1/2 and 3/4 ton. According to leadfoot front disc brake hubs and calipers from a '73-'79 will swap straight onto the 67-72 1 ton spindles. He said that if the calipers use the same bolt holes that the drum brake backing plates use. I'll try to find the thread.

I'd seen that same thread, FBF, & wondered if I was reading it correctly. It does sound like he was saying our spindles will work as-is & we'd just need the brackets & calipers off the dentside F350s, and of course the rotors off up to the early '90s models.

Since my F350 is a project & not a driver like yours, I'll tear the front brakes apart & do some investigating on the subject this winter. Maybe we'll be lucky & not have to swap out the whole I beam assemblies like the "little guys".

cooltoolguy has a '72 and a dentside F350. Maybe we could get some confirmation of what leadfoot says from him. Mine's kind of a "driving project". I just drove it for the first time in a month after floor pan surgery.
