I miss my Muncie 4 speed!

Post by loveoldtrux »

I used to love to drive my '57 Chevy Tudor with its' built 454 driving up highway 41.... the 5:13 rear just whining and the close ratio purring in my right hand.

I'd love to have something similar behind my built 460 in Harrison. The only thing the truck "hauls" now-a-days is perhaps a loaf of bread, so I don't tow anything with him. The C-6 is about to krap out on me (from an Econoline van), but has served me well through the years.

I guess the 2wd shortbed is a little heavier than the Tudor, but I'm wondering is there any setup for a "performance" 4-5 speed in these trucks? Again - the truck isn't drag raced and I don't tow.... I just miss the sound of a built 460+ in front of a manual tranny going through two 48" thrush mufllers....

I've seen many parts on e-Bay including the 3 pedal assembly and a variety of Bellhousings / clutches / hydraulic cylinders.... anybody happy with their "performance" system?....

Do your Ford a favor and convert to a toploader. 5.13 gears and a big block for the road, what is all that about?

I am a 3 pedal man too. My second "pickup" is a 429 with a big shaft toploader, still under construction though.
My everyday driver is a NP435 soon to be a ZF 5 speed.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

I love a straight shift but man it gets old sometimes having to shift gears.

you don't need a granny gear for a general driver, so rule out the np-435 and t-18. id'e say a ZF-5 speed and 4.10's

i'm a three pedaler to. i feel powerless driving an auto. i like to be able to control the rpm's and have the ability to shift at will. plus it makes for better burnouts

I've converted both of my F100's into sticks(I hate slushboxes).

I put a nice wide ratio toploader in them and love it. Even in stop/go traffic it's pretty easy to drive.
Bump'n along.

The ZF 5 speed is a granny tranny, it's almost a bolt in with a 460 though.

No kidding, I got stuck driving my '70 from Seattle to Olympia one Friday afternoon with a 16K lb trailer in tow. Burned 18 gallons to go 60 miles in 4 hours. Sure I would have burned half the clutch away and more fuel without granny.

Find a '88-'97 F-2/350 with the 460 if you want these ratios.

1st: 5.72
2nd: 2.94
3rd: 1.61
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.76

I am gathering up parts to put a four speed toploader in my long box.
I will need to use a two piece driveshaft, because of the length.
Rear driveshaft is no problem; but what about the front?
You need a sliding yoke to fit the toploader, but the front driveshaft doesn't slide. So you need to drop the hanger bearing to remove the transmission? Is there an easier way to do this?

Why not just run a one piece driveline? Late 80's ford 1/2 ton vans used a really long single piece driveline that's real close to bumpside 2wd longbed length. Running two slip yokes in a driveline is asking for trouble.
