Power steering conversion

Post by fitzdicksn »

My questions were:
I have the Saginaw box, pitman, and auto column from a 72 F100 along with the PS pump and brackets. I am planning on installing PS in my 69 F100 with 240 I-6 and 4 spd manual. Reading the forums and tech articles on the website it looks like I will be able to just swap the 72 steering shaft into my original 69 column as it is already shorter than an auto column and it can take the 72 shaft without modification. Correct??.

Question 1: I did get the floor mounting bracket with the 72 auto column. Do I need to use it or will my original 69 bracket work?

Question 2: I did NOT get the drag link and tie rods from the 72 F100 at the wrecker. Will the original 69 parts work? or is the Saginaw PS box wider moving the centre line of the pitman over towards the passenger side?

Thanks
Fitz

i think you are good to go with the parts you bought. a couple of things though. you will want to use the power steering bracket that came with the 72 on the outside of the firewall. that bracket is different for manuals and power steering. also there was some thing about a change in the pitman ar m or the draglink in mid 71 and it had a affect of getting the mid 71 up parts or something like that. its in a post here i think it was in a disscusion about boots doing his radius ar m extensions. or it was in that time frame.

I found the post you referred to as well as several others. Thanks for the help. But I still don't believe I have the answer I was looking for.

There is reference on the website to a change of pitman ar*m style in July 1971 so based on that I presume the 1972 pitman will NOT bolt up to my 1969 drag link and tie rods. it looks like the angle is wrong where it bolts to the drag link. But will my 1969 pitman ar*m fit onto the 1972 Saginaw PS box?

If it will, then I am off to the races. Other wise it looks like another trip to wrecker. Unfortunately it is about 250 miles away. Haven't been able to find a donor truck closer.

Sorry this is posted twice. Been awhile since I posted to a forum and I forgot a few things!

Thanks Fordman, here is a photo of the original unrestored 37 year old far*m truck that hopefully will have nice easy steering next week. About 75,000 miles on the old girl. Always kept indoors.Image[/img]
