Stering Column Bearing Help

Post by cghstrojan08 »

What is the name of this bearing in the steering column? It is where the steering column attaches to the steering box. Where can I get a new one? How hard is it to install a new one? No chilton books talks about this one. Thanks!

Not the rag joint. I mean there is a bearing that goes inside the end of the steering column where it attaches to the rag joint.

LMCTruck.com has them

My column was grinding a bit. I was able to loosen the column and slide it about an inch toward the PS box by removing the steering wheel. This exposed the lower half of the bearing which allowed me to pack some grease into it.

It looked like the column might have to come out to replace that bearing if it has fallen apart.

In addition, I think the bearing was more expensive than I expected, like $20-$25, might just be poor memory on my part though.

Do you know the part number of the bearing? I have the magazine for LMC if you know the name of it. Thanks!

This is where I got my parts to rebuild my column. Their communication was not that great, but the parts finally arrived and worked. Their catalog also has a good exploded view calling out their part numbers so you can get everything you need.

Here's a link to the exploded view on this site.

Dennis Carpenter has them, the replacements are nylon.

However, it has been a while since I've had mine apart but I am resonably sure that that little cup is supposed to be nade onto the column.

Edit Dennis Carpenter not Dennis Kirk (was looking for fork seals earlier...)

I believe those are steering colum bearings.

you should get two of them, one for the upper and one for the lower.

I got mine from the ford dealership in town and they were only 3.50 apiece.

That was earlier this year.

see:

You want page 10-13.

I still think the Column is damaged... That bearing cup should be made onto the Column and can't get all cocked around without being damaged...

I ordered the bearing (upper and lower) and some seal for it just a few minutes ago. How do I take the steering column out to work on it? Or, is there some other way to fix the bearings?

Unhook the rag joint, the strap around the column and the column support inside the engine compartment. Unhook the tranny rod if it's an auto. remove the column support from the firewall. Inside, remove the screws holding the column seal to the firewall, and unhook the two electrical plugs coming out of the column. Remove the two bolts holding the coulmn to the dash and withdraw the column into the cab. You may have to turn and finaggle it a bit, but it comes through the firewall into the cab. I would leave the wheel on and remove it after the column is out.
