removing & replacing the bed corner

Post by dotcentral »

Any ideas on how to remove a corner section of the bed, the piece that is sort of the cap to the end of the bed, and the tailgate pivots/latches onto?

Does that piece have an actual name?

break it loose at the seam by drilling out the spot welds or use a muffler cutter to cut most of it off and grind the rest down.

Drilling out the spotwelds is going to be next to impossible, since many of them can only be accessed from behind the taillight assembly, and there just simply isn't enough room. I'd just do as fordman suggested....use a cutoff wheel to remove as much of it as you can, and then grind down the rest. Of course, this course of action isn't much help if you're trying to remove a good one from a parts truck to reuse....unless you cut the donor truck's bed from the opposite side, which will essentially ruin the box, but if it's already junk, then it's no problem.

I ordered a bed end cap and a rear bed section due to a deer hitting it before I bought it. Gonna cut it out with a cutting wheel and stay below the tail light since the new panel is not cut out and isn't damaged that high up. Can't wait to get the new panels installed after it gets back from the media blaster before too much longer.
