Power Brake Help

Post by cghstrojan08 »

My truck is a 1969 f100 with manual tranny. I got my booster and bracket from a 1968 with an automatic. Is there going to be any problems? Also, I can't use the master cylinder on the booster from the donor. Can I use the one from my truck with no power brakes? Thanks!

There is no difference in master cylinders between power and manual brakes, so yes, you can reuse your old master cylinder. (There IS a difference between drum and disc MCs though.) You don't even have to disconnect any brake lines to install the booster. Simply unbolt the MC pushrod from the brake pedal and then remove the two nuts holding the MC on. Then gently pull the MC back from the firewall enough so you'll have room to stuff the booster behind it. Remove the MC pushrod (since the booster already has one). Then insert the booster behind the MC, bolt it up to the firewall and brake pedal, and bolt the MC to the booster. Then just run a vacuum source line to the intake manifold (NOT the carburetor) and you're set.

On my MC, I just remove thr rod with a tug? Also, do I remove the rubber grommet on the end?

Yes, the pushrod is just held in with a clip...you'll see it when you look at the back of the MC. Just pull the rod out. As for the grommet, I can't remember....I don't think you'll need it, I'm pretty sure the booster has a MC gasket on the front face, but I can't recall now that I'm thinking about it.

The booster that I got has been in the weather for a while. Is there anything I need to replace like that grommet in the booster? I have no idea.

If you're talking about the grommet in the hole that the mc pushrod sticks out of, that's a vacuum seal. Hope it's ok 'cause I don't know where you can get one. (Does the "Help" section have those?)

I like to put a vacuum pump on used boosters to see if they'll hold vacuum. You could try hooking it up to your engine and testing it by itself.

I think (?) he's referring to the rubber boot on the end of the MC, that the pushrod protrudes through.

Oh. Well, you don't use that with a booster.

My truck with power brakes has an adjustable pushrod between mc and booster. They need to be adjusted to what the info states in the book.

The seal in the front of the booster that goes around that adjustable rod came out. Is that bad? I need to replace it but I can't find a place that sells the seal. One of the studs for the brackets on the booster twisted off also. Should I just turn it in and get a rebuild one from Advance Auto? Thanks

Yes, I agree....use it for a core (if they need one) and just get a good replacement booster, rather than messing with that one.

re: Power Brake Help

I just put a used power brake setup on my crew. I priced the new booster and they gave me the option of adjustable or non adjustable rod. Whats the difference and is one better than the other? The used one I put in had an adjustable rod, everything lined up so I didn't adjust it. Just wondering in case I have to replace the used one. Thanks Doug

It's always better to have an adjustable rod, just in case. It would be nice to never have to mess with it, but it'll be even nicer to have in case you do.

the non adjustable type are a different setup all the way to the pedal so if it has an adjustable type stick with it.
