Mid-80's flareside box on a bumpside truck?

Post by FORDification »

Just throwing this out here for general discussion. What do you think of the mid-late-80's flareside box on our bumpsides?

Personally, I kinda like the look of this more than the older style used by the factory with the rounded fenders. This box looks more in line with the square boxy lines of the rest of the truck.

I like it, it does match the lines better on the older trucks. The Mrs. has always liked the newer ones also.

BTW, I have one if you are thinking of using that style on one of your projects. Its headed to the scrapper as soon as I finish robbing parts off the truck.

Yeah i like the newer flairside way better. i mean it ain't like the original flairside hade the Bump on it iether. Also it adds a place for a covered filler neck for fuel.

I like it! AND availability issue is HUGE. I am/was facing a huge issue in looking for a good short bed for my crewcab. What years will fit and are they a direct bolt on? Good find!

Those boxes look much better than the rounded style. They only look good on trucks up through 56.

alright, lay off the old flair side, i'm kinda fond of mine. however that does look good, fits the lines better than the chevy guys when they do it.
what i like about the origional is that with the right stance, it looks like a bull dog hence my 7 year old named mine spike. you can not see the fenders when looking at the truck dead on and it really looks mean.

Hey
For months on end I've had to justify to everyone why I want to keep my "stepper" a stepper. And am all most ashamed to admit I was considering a conventional swb box (because they are so abundant...HEHEHE). I have a line on several of this generation stepside bed,and was intending to use the older style fenders . I had the "wonder how those dually looking fenders would lineup" with a friend of mine and he commented that the "bowtie"boys had crossed that bridge and he thought the look was rather red-neck res-TOE (restoration) and he really didn't care for it. He knew I was considering replacing the side and front tin on my box , he said get the one with the fiberglass fenders and set it on there before ruling them out , Some one has taken the leg work out for me , I LIKE it . Those beds are every where, and I really like the wheel well space inside of the bed . This has really put me ahead in my project, the search for bed tin in workable shape just went away .

P.S.
Thanks again Keith,
Those pics put a little life back in my project . I have been a lull for quite sometime now . All of a sudden I had that 'tingle' you know the one , it comes when you see UPS coming down the road and you know that part you won on e-bay is due anyday.

Stay tuned we will bring you details as the situation unfolds.

 Glad to help out, Tony!

The pic on the left is a truck that's currently on E-bay, and when I saw that it reminded me of one that I had in my pictures file (the one on the right). I too was figuring that these beds are much more plentiful and usually in better shape than ours, so finding a semi-inexpensive (comparatively speaking) box would be easier...plus I do prefer the look of these over the bumpside version. It just looks a bit more modern than the early-Effies flareside that was on our trucks. And having the fuel filler door alread integrated is a big plus too, for those of us who want to remove the in-cab tank.

I don't know anything about the logistics of actually mounting one, though. Tony, when/if you decide to go this route, take some pics and measurements for us, like overall length and width, the width of the current mounting holes, etc. The beds in the pics above look like they're centered over the rear wheels pretty nicely, so the length must be very similar to ours.
