License Plate Restoration

Post by dcbullet »

Does anybody know of a tutorial on license plate restoration? I have the California black plate with yellow lettering. I assume I need to find some reflective yellow paint and that I can use just regular glossy black paint for the background? Wondering if there is a trick to this and a source for that paint.

Well I've done some research on the internet and apparently the yellow on black (and yellow on blue as well) CA plates do not have reflective material in the paint. So it's just a matter of finding a yellow paint that matches. Black should be pretty easy. ;-)

Here's some info on CA plates, everything except the answer to your question.

I've heard the yellow called chrome yellow, and the lettering is best applied with a roller.

Seem to remember somewhere that you can't repaint a plate and use it on the vehicle. If it's worn out the DMV wants the plate back.

Yeah, I read that too. I'm hoping they've got better things to do than give me a ticket for making my plate legible.
