Tranny ID help

Post by Whoaaanelly »

I'm not all too familiar with the transmissions used in these trucks. I can't tell from looking at the tech page which transmission this is. It was added (obviously) and isn't what the truck was supposed to have. And it's way to grimy to start scraping the whole thing to find numbers. It'll come out soon for clean up and seal replacement at the very least, but kind'a want to know what I'm working with first.

Also, does anyone know what this connector is for on the rear top cover? Back up light, neutral safety?

Thanks.

Looks like it is a T-18, would need to see the shift lever to be sure.

The connector is for the backup lights.

Well, of all the shots I've taken of this truck so far -- none show the shift lever very clearly. I can certainly take one specifically of that and post it tomorrow. Nice to know that's for back-up lights. I'll ohm it out tonight and make sure it closes in reverse and opens when not.

Wow, that's a helluva way to cut sheet metal, especially that much of it.

Those shift towers/plates interchange between the NP and T-18, when I bought my T-18 it didn't have the shift tower so I used the one from my old NP. Fit perfect, but obviously my shift knob was no longer accurate with it showing reverse was right and down when it was really up. 8)

Yeah, I just about laughed when I saw that yesterday for the first time. I will certainly be cleaning this up. It left a huge ledge on the back side for every imaginable piece of crud to lodge -- plus water couldn't drain either (if it got up there).

Interesting what you say. Are you talking just the shift lever and locking nut or the whole top of the tranny? My shift knob does read backwards from what the actual shift pattern is -- but also shows a 5-speed pattern, so I think it's just a junkyard knob.

Yup. I'm pretty sure that's a T-18.

The whole top of the transmission.
I agree, sounds like your knob is junk yard item.

So I take it the automatic trucks don't have the hole in the center of the cab? I thought there was a dummy plate in the center. I helped a guy change the clutch in his '58 F-100 once. It was a column shift, but it just had a blank cover bolted in the center.
