Bands and clutch packs in the C series, FMX and the AO4D would slip with Dexron if it was not mixed with Type - F. Type - F was death to standard build Turbo 350s and 400s. Type - F was built stiffer for the Ford trannies' softer bands and clutches. GMs were built the other way. A racing TH 400 with B&M parts was required to use B&M fluid. A blue version of Type - F.
Ok well, ALL Ford Transmissions PRE 1983 take type F!
ALL Ford Transmissions 1983-later take Dexron III aka Mercon!
At least through the early 90s, Ford Powersteering takes Type F.
The AOD has always taken Dexron.

On the PS.

Use ONLY what is recommended by the manufacturer.

On the Transmission, You can use Type F in a trans calling for DEXRONII, but not DEXRONII in an original transmission calling for Type F.

However, all new fibers, bands and seals that I am aware of for rebuilding older Ford transmissions arDEXRONon compatable.

The main difference in Type F and DEXRONII is the way it reacts to friction. This is why Type F will cause a firmer shift in a DEXRONII transmission.
