stopping at a red light and the brakes go out !!!!!!!

Post by AmericanMadeFord »

well i was driving down the road and the light turns red. as i start getting closer to the red light i start to brake. then out of no were the peddle goes striate to the flor and i run right threw the red light, almost getting hit by a chevy.

after getting my truck back to the house i realized that the main brake line that runs from the combination valve to the flexible rubber house broke.
now my ? is do they make meatal brake hoes that long still all i can find is 5ft pices and i need 9. and since i am replacing the meatal line. the rubber hoes on the end of that line looks pretty bad.
i want to replace that one to its just i don't know if its just that hose or do i need the brass connector block. if not how do i get the hose out of that connector block??

I believe you can just buy the tubing by the foot as long as you can make your own ends.

My local car Quest has a stack in 5 or 6 foot lengths in the show room. I assume you would need some kind of bender to make sure you don't kink the lines.
I am sure someone smarter than me will fill you in on all the do's and don'ts tonight. I will be watching, because I always wondered myself on how to bend them properly.

Not quite sure which parts you need to replace from your description.. If you can provide some pictures of what broke and what you want to replace I could be more helpful.

You can also splice together several shorter pieces to make your long enough, if you were just getting the straight pieces from the local parts store. I bent all my own brake lines from straight pieces, and ran about 12" short of my very last line, though I had another piece long enough to make it up. I figured one union in there wasn't going to hurt anything, so I just used it.

Image

Just get enough 5/16" line, as well as a union and the proper ends, and you'll do fine. Bending these lines is easy, though you'd probably have to get your hands on a double-flare tool. I put together a mini-tutorial on how to double-flare brake lines at the following link:

http://www.fordification.com/my67-p34.htm

Otherwise, as suggested, just get a roll of tubing so you can just do it in one piece, though you're going to end up with quite a bit left over. Oh well....as long as you have the tubing and tools, you might as well do the other lines, since if one went out, the others might not be too far behind. ;)

And one thing I found out when doing mine....you really don't need a tubing bender on this small 5/16" line, it won't kink unless you're doing a very sharp bend. For the most part, you'd really have to try to kink the line to do so.

Dude, that looks like a banjo connector (at least that's what my dad called them) :hmm: If the brass end connects directly to the front brake caliper (disc) you will need to keep it rubber so you can turn your tires without breaking the line and having another adventure in driving.

It looks like the flexible line that connects the break caliper to the solid lines. If it is, you might be able to shorten it a little but you need to make sure you have enough line to allow your tires to turn without breaking the line. You already found out what happens when the line breaks while driving. It can be a rather unique experience. :woohoo:

Just getting my :2cents: in.

Something I can't figure out::hmm:
The braking system on these trucks is 'split' meaning it is designed so that if one half loses pressure to due a broken line, the other half will maintain pressure and allow the truck to stop.
Your truck broke a line, but it still should have been able to stop. I think you may have more problems than just one broken line.
