Best paint--Going Black

I'm getting the inside of the bed sandblasted Friday, so its time to start thinking about paint. The color is going to be Black Clearcoat. Anyone have any sugesstions about paint brands or anything that can be done in the process to make it better. I have a lot invested in this truck and I want to make sure I get the best paint job possible.

A good brand name Polyurethane is what you want. But... with this, you need to realize that polyurethanes are catalyzed with isocyanide... so you have to protect yourself and those around you when the paint is out of the can. The regular "respirator" wont help ya... I sure wouldn't want to recommend shooting it in a neighborhood or in your garage, unless you have a really good waterfall filter system on the exhaust. If you're going to have someone else paint it, then they should know what they're doing.
To go black, the body work needs to be PERFECT or the black will magnify every little blem and ripple... but nothing looks much better than a really good shiny black paint job!!!!!
Stick with a brand of paint/primer all the way through, and follow the manufacturer's tech sheets to the letter!!!!!! The manufacturers spend LOTS of money researching the best way to get thier paint to work and hold up, and all the "good ol' boys" that think they are smarter, are just idiots and will cost you money in the long run!

A friend of mine will be doing the body work and painting at our horse trailer factory. We have 3 paint booths one of which is a down draft system, so we will have a good place to do it. I have been around painting all of my life in the trailer business, but horse trailers and trucks are to different animals. I am going to try to post some before pictures soon. (If I am smart enough) Thanks for the info and wish me luck.

Two of the highly respected premium brands are Sikkens and Glasruit (sp?), the more common are of course Dupont and PPG (AKA Ditzler).

Painters always have their preferences, but my advice would be for your friend to use the same thing he always uses, unless its unsuitable for same reason.

He says Sherman-Williams. I guess their auto paint is good, but thier trailer paint is not the best. Thanks for the info. The more the better

I personally think HOK would be good for paint if its for the whole bed, not just the inside. if its JUST the inside, go with a rhino liner style deal. but HOK has a paint that has "crystals" in it, its gorgeous. I will try to get a link for it. Its not like a flake paint, but just gives the black a character, unlike a single stage paint or non-metallic opawue color.

dont go etching......get your body as straight as you possibly can, metal working it. then do an EPOXY PRIMER and do your body work OVER that. then spray a urethane primer over that, then spray ur paint.

the epoxy method is what they use on high dollar paint jobs.

Like I said previously.... figure out what paint you're going to use, then use the primers/thinners, etc. that THEY recommend...
I'm a big fan of House of Kolor (even since Jon sold out to Valspar)... been using it for years, but it's expensive! I had really good luck with the PPG that I used on my daughter's pickup, and plan on using it again. I've used Sikkens and it's great stuff. The important thing (and this is coming from an ex paint manufacturer here) is that you don't mix one company's paint and another company's reducer, and another company's primer and on and on... we had people call up with problems and usually we could trace it back to something like that. The companies spend LOTS of money, doing research and testing to ensure total and the best compatability of all their products... why not take advantage of that?? The people that think they know more than the manufacturers are just kidding themselves and costing you money in the long run.

We use Valspar of our trailers and it is a really good trailer paint. I think I could get Jamie to give me enough to paint my truck now that you mention it. What about their auto paint?????????

Valspar is a god auto paint also. My Dad owns a Body shop for over 30 years and he has sprayed a little of everything. He likes Dupont the best but that is just his preference. A good primer and paint will mean the difference between a long lasting adn good looking paint job or a short lived paint job. Just remember the paint work is only as good as what is underneath. (I.E the body work and primer.)
